What is a relic?
Relics, along with icons, of the saints are a physical reminder of the presence of the saints both with us and with God. Relics can take two different forms, either primary relics, which are pieces of bone of the saints; or they can be items that a saint touched, vestments or other clothing, for instance. The robe of Elijiah, for instance, was used to part the Jordan River and raise a boy from the dead. In our community, in Lafayette, we are blessed with a bone fragment from St. Raphael, Bishop of Brooklyn. This month we were blessed with a piece of vestment from St. John of San Francisco. May God continue to encourage and inspire us through the prayers of these two great luminaries of 20th century America!
